Growing through Observation and Feedback

by Tina Stoltzfus Horst, M.S., Master Trainer

As a new coach I dreaded being observed by my trainer as I coached my peer.  I’d worry ahead of time about the mistakes I’d make in technique, or that I’d be so anxious I wouldn’t be able to frame an open question!  But my mentor coach was well versed in affirmation, and well able to create a positive, safe learning experience for my peer and I.  I soon learned to look forward to, rather than dread, these catalytic learning times.

Being observed and gaining feedback from an experienced coach/trainer during a real coaching session can quickly take our coaching to the next level.  This month, I interviewed Nancy, a recent FOCOS graduate, on her experience of going through the observation and feedback process in FOCOS with her mentor coach and peer.

Nancy identified several key ways an observation and feedback session helped her:

  1.  Building confidence: Nancy shared that the 4C (Confidence, Competence, metaCognition, and Commitment) Observation and Feedback sessions she had gave her confidence at a whole new level.  Her mentor coach encouraged her “all the way!”.  Receiving affirmation in what we are doing well frees us to confidently put our skills to work with clients.

  2. Opportunity to try new skills and learn from mistakes:  In Nancy’s words, “I didn’t need to be perfect.  The safety element is there, this is the time to learn.”  As coaches, we believe that mistakes are an opportunity to learn. This applies to our clients and to ourselves. At FOCOS Platform, we believe that truly empowering people includes providing a place for mutual learning and growth through failures and successes.  Great feedback includes affirmation as well as specific ways to grow, and room to reflect on mistakes.

  3. Practice makes permanent:  Nancy said, “In our training program, we have to have so much theory, reading books and materials, watching demos, and a little practice in teleclasses, but this is not enough, it's an appetizer.  A 4C Observation and Feedback session helps you work with a real client with a real issue and a real story.  Theories and rules you forget, but the practical stays with you.”

Being observed and getting feedback from a master coach/trainer is not just for trainees or new coaches.  All of us, no matter what our experience level, can learn from this kind of structured observation, reflection, and feedback, whether in a 4C setting, or in a mentor coaching group.

FOCOS Platform offers 4C Observation and Feedback sessions with a Lead Trainer open to anyone, with cost based on your ability to pay.  You can find out more, here:  4C Observation and Feedback Session — FOCOS Platform

You can also sign up for a mentor coaching group with a FOCOS Master Trainer.  Find more information here: ICF Mentor Coaching (Group #10) — FOCOS Platform

What will you do this month to continue growing your skills through observation and feedback?
